The Power of Collective Effort
Mushroom Spawn Production
Aaturgaon is a village in Chhattisgarh's Kanker district. In 2020, Udyogini entered the scene to better understand the potential of various livelihood opportunities for women. The villagers were already engaged in income-generating activities, but were unable to earn enough to live on.
To improve the economic situation, Udyogini organized women into an enterprise group of ten members and provided Entrepreneurship Development Programme training. The idea for spawn production arose because local farmers cultivated mushrooms but struggled to obtain seed locally.
Technical training was provided in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra. The panchayat granted the group a newly constructed community building. The group contributed INR 11,000 for an electricity connection, while Udyogini provided machines and raw materials.
Despite initial challenges and waste, with regular training and guidance, the group sold 271 kg in 2020-21 and 283 kg in 2021-22. They now deal with approximately 110-120 farmers annually. The group's annual family income increased from INR 37,000 to INR 1,000,000 through diversified products.
